When people believe things very strongly there is just no room for anything else. Not only in religion but in other situations in life as well. Look at Covid and the many people who believe it is a hoax. Also in the spiritual world there are very strong believesThe neurophysiological effects of religious belief are scientific facts that can be accurately measured. The prefontal cortex is an area in the brain involved with control. So it is only natural that that area is stronger when it comes to strong believes. Very strong beleives in whatever shape or form activates the same reward-processing brain circuits as sex, drugs, and other addictive activities.

Or maybe the question should be written "Why did 'Christians' persecute people accused of being Witches in Salem Massachusetts?"

A chap by the name of Cotton Mather who was a minister of Boston's North Church, printed a book titled Memorable Providences Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions which helped fueled the animosity toward those accused of being Witches.

It should be remembered, the Puritans fled to the New World because of religious persecution but in many ways, the persecuted became the persecutor.
