Here's a very nice explanation on how the 7 chakra system came to be.
For me chakra are mere idea's and focal points that help us guide our understanding and ability to manipulate our being to where we want to go. Shamanic journeying, the chinese acupuncture points and meridian system does the same thing. In my humble opinion of course..

It’s an interesting article but only speaks to a representative model and there are many for example Cyndi Dale’s big book about chakras or Paul Hougham’s Atlas but the real story about Chakras comes when you experience them. It’s pointless speaking about them until you have an experience. That’s when they start to come into your consciousness and there are many stages and levels to that.
And every tradition is biased towards its point of view. So...politics and prejudice. St Theresa of Avila had no chakra vocabulary to describe her experience so she wrote about them as the mansions Jesus refers to, “In my Father’s house there are many mansions.” He actually refers to the third eye too, “When thine eye is single thy body will be full of light.” so why is this in the Christian canon if they don’t acknowledge the existence of Chakras? It’s a topic for people who experience their subtle anatomy. In this age most people don’t but eventually everyone will.
Main thing is to feel them first and then ask for guidance and it will come in the perfect way.
