Covid - remembering those who were taken away

Air recirculating heating and cooling systems are found in many types of buildings. Does anyone know know if all such systems are currently protecting against Covid-19 virus particles being recirculated? Or for that matter against other serious viruses?

If systems actually are providing virus removal/killing then there's nothing I should have concerns about.

If you look at the filter, it will tell you if it will filter out viruses. Before the Pandemic, virtually nobody was interested in those filters. It took about 1/2 year into the Pandemic before people, for the most part, were even aware of such filters.

I remember back at the beginning of the pandemic, talking to one Government employee whose job was HVAC. I asked him if they should wear gas masks when changing such filters. He told me yes but was told by the local Government officials not to wear one because it would scare citizens.

There's no point in telling me about the filters, BJ. I'm retired anyway!

It's a simple enough principle, though, that recirculating ventilation and heating/cooling systems need to be correctly specified, installed and maintained, even more now than they should have been previously. Those that aren't pose a risk to building users and venting-to-outdoors would be preferable in such situations.

I wonder if folk have experienced fewer coughs, colds and influenza this past 12 months? We've been in contact with far-fewer other individuals and have been less exposed to the bugs they cough, sneeze and breathe out, bugs that can also be recirculated in closed-loop ventilation/heating/cooling systems.

My son... Headteacher in school.. has grown up suffering from a severe case of sinus problems..
As a result he has been under hospital care because of it.. and has suffered on and off , almost continually because of it , but certainly , since being a teacher, has caught every bug going. The second, normally that they are all back at school in September ... Within a couple of weeks, cold , flu... Etc etc and it's rife.
For the winter season 2020/21.... Thus far... He has not had a single sniffle. That in itself is a miracle.

Hi pixie.... We do indeed take it seriously.
The whole of existence has been affected by this... God help us to get through it the best we can.
It's a living nightmare.
It's worse than a film.
We are living it..
It's real.

Maybe.........

I have been in contact with more people this year.

I think what has helped is people are more conscious about the problem.

I haven't had even a sniffle this winter but I've not been in contact with anyone but my wife who in turn hasn't been in contact with anyone else save for grocery shopping once a week.

I expect many others will similarly have had less contact with fellow humans over the winter. (a much smaller number will have had more contact) Maybe someone will publish statistics showing the full winter infection picture at some point but one thing I've heard nothing about this season is influenza.

Maybe when this Covid-19 virus is under some degree of management we should continue to wear masks when we're with others not in our family group? That and washing hands more often might avoid spreading the regular respiratory infections we humans get every winter. Everyone wearing a mask would be helping protect others and doing that in sufficient numbers would help protect those who won't wear a mask or can't.

Hi Elfin - good to 'see' you around again.

Your son's freedom from respiratory issues while schools have been out so much is hardly likely to be coincidence. Wouldn't it be great for folk to start taking simple precautions against spreading their germs in winter? I wonder how many would holler, though, that it's an infringement of their personal liberty being asked to wear a mask for that reason.

About 5-6 years ago, I know of one person, in perfect health, that was stricken down by a virus. The doctors did not know what type of virus it was. To ascertain that, it would take money and research.

That person spent 18 days in the hospital. Most of those days were spent on a ventilator. The person did not know who they were let alone recognize their parents. During this time period, the person would have seizures. When the person started 'coming around', then the person begged others to kill her.

Bottom line. These viruses have been around for some time and have caused much havoc. We should have been doing some serious research on this subject but we didn't. For the most part, virtually nobody knew such things existed.

As I keep saying to anyone that will listen...
We have learnt a lot of lessons from all of this
I for one, will be happy to continue wearing a mask after all of this is done.
It's certainly changed my life and my way of thinking
We all need to be less complacent..
