A friend once told me that she had seen a male human rise out of the water at a local bay, look straight at her, then go back under the water never to reappear. She was the only person at the bay at the time.
I guessed that he was an amphibian so asked her was he repulsive. She said he was.
The word Annedotus is often improperly translated as repulsive so I showed her a picture of an amphibian and she said it looked just like what she saw

I would say there are numerous of stories of this creature have existed for thousands of years. Christopher Columbus claimed to see real life mermaid but he stated that was not as beautiful as it is shown in movies and cartoons because of his fishery skin but yeah we could call her half fish and half body like a human. And hey i think you should have a visit of Weeki Wachee. You will be amazed by seeing the live mermaids performing there. Just for fun.
