Owls

I have never heard of owls being evil, although the native people's have a knowledge that owls are harbingers of imminent passings.

I hear them making sounds at night and I notice when I make the same sound they stop for a min (Like my sound is almost the same as thiers)

Owls are adept hunters. They have sharp talons, and their colors blend in with their natural surroundings making them hard to spot. They have serrated edges on their feathers that muffle their wing beats to allow for slow, silent flight and the ability to quietly pounce on unsuspecting prey....

I've listened to great horned owls hooting in the trees of my yard at night. Many a night have I had them perching just beyond my bedroom window. (Now I'm starting to sound like that one lyric in the song: "wildfire").

By day, I have even filmed a pair of them perched in my back yard, and another that swooped in to my side yard not more than 20 feet away from the den window from which I watched it. Just on the other side of my window, I watched it pounce on a garter snake and squeeze it with talons while the snake whirled and knotted itself into an afternoon snack for that owl.

One mild winter night around midnight I was sitting in complete darkness atop the deep bank of a river that runs behind my place (I was experimenting with my "natural night vision" ability without lights of any kind). Staring at the vague twinkling of tiny current waves, suddenly there was this ominous, huge, dark shadow zooming past me - in eerie absolute silence & not more than 30 feet away. Now, that was a startling experience..! I thought it was a wraith of some kind... But about 4 hours later, while still stunned at this soundless, shadowy figure, it finally dawned on me - that it too was a great horned owl gliding through the open channel between the forest of trees that surrounded us.

Had a barn owl living in my barn for a brief season - but I think by my surprise visit on it, it decided to find a quieter barn elsewhere,

The most amazing thing I saw was a tiny screech owl perched on the grab irons of a coal train car once, when I worked nights inspecting trains. The job is done by using one of these little ATV's (Kawasaki; Kubota; Cushman) and driving down the length of trains with side spot lights on them. On this particular train inspection, I was about halfway down one side of the 130 car train when I came upon this little 8"-10" fellow sitting on a grab iron at the height just above my head. It stared me down as I drove up, beside, and past it - and I thought : "what a neat little thing to see from not more than 4 or 5 feet away." ... Yet even more surprising was when about a half hour later, I was going down the other side of that same train, and that cute little fellow actually hopped over to another grab iron just to watch me approach it again, from the other side of the train. That one was quietly watching me - but Boy...! When you hear a screech owl screech in close proximity - it is one sharp sounding racket to someone with sensitive ears!

Owls make me think of wisdom and having a higher perspective on life. They have such large eyes so they are true seers. I love them, but then I love all birds.
