Baba Neeb Karori

Maharajji (Neem Karoli Baba) told this story, i'm recalling from memory since i couldn't find it again:

A pundit used to daily worship Shiva's murti in a temple and also another man used to daily verbally insult the same murti, blaming Shiva for all the wrong doings in the world. Once there was a flood, the pundit didn't cross the river to get to the other side to the temple. However the other man crossed the raging river, went to the temple and began insulting Shiva again saying that "What will you do now, today even your pundit hasn't come". Shiva immediately appeared before him and said "You're my true devotee. Ask me for whatever you want".

The story you narrated is incomplete. So let me finish the story.

When the water was inundating the place every one was moving to a higher /safer place. 2-3 people came to the pundit to go to a higher safer place. But pundit said i am a true devotee of God and my God will save me. But the raging water caught up him and drowned him.

So when He met the Shiva in Heaven He asked the deity why was he not saved from raging river waters. To this shiva replied, you had 2-3 people came to you to guide to a safer place-what do you think who they were (meaning they were God sent people only which he failed to recognize) .

Expecting every time some miracle to be done by God expressly / explicitly is a folly and beyond a point insult too. God's help come after we are done with everything legitimately we can do it through resources at our disposal. God is embodiment of His laws of nature / sciences. Expecting Him to circumvent His own laws is more of childish. Of course the devotion pundit did is His sadhana / penance and will be there to his credit in his next birth.

Further He told the non-believer that you are my true devotee because He cared for the pundit who died and blamed the deity for it. So he had the real spirit of devotion viz caring for others. That's where He said is true devotee and NOT to reward the fact of non-belief in God. Of course non-believer may still have to do a lot to progress. Random successes or grace of God due karma may not qualify him to a true devotee.

Like chinese whispers loss of information may lead to distorted facts / conclusions. So just tried to complete the story.

Totally different stories.

When Krishna elongated Draupadi's sari then wasn't he circumventing the laws of physics?

laws of God

You are entitled to your version of the stories with all the conclusions and inferences you may wish to take . It's the beauty of Chinese whispers every one feels that their narrations of the whispers is perfect.

God itself being intricate web of laws would not wish to break it for trivia reasons . What we feel may be breach of laws may be compliance of an additional law which gives an image of breach of original law. e.g. before aircrafts were invented , it was law that man can not fly. With inventions of aircraft it became clear that man can fly by sitting in a vehicle which can propel / displace air more than the weight of the vehicle. So earlier rule is enhanced and not breached with the invention of aircraft though at the outset aircraft may look like a miracle .Same can be said of all kinds of miracle .

Further if we attribute miracles to God incarnate, son of God, messenger of God or enlightened ones etc I certainly believe it verbatim /literally because by having special association by whatever name to unlimited unending reservoir of power they inherit the miraculous powers. I dont have any objection whatsoever for whatever belief in miraculous powers of such beings.

Jesus was certainly, deliberately circumventing laws of physics, also.
And how wonderful they both did. :)

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

Very well noted Miss Hepburn - deliberately and openly, like a teacher trying to show something.
