Belle,
You are not alone when it comes to these things. Most of us have been conditioned to be this way.
In my case, I would rather trust my inclinations/intuition/instincts(heart) and be wrong than trust my brain(ego) and be right. This trust in love goes beyond our every day perceptions about short term well being it the realm beyond the physical.
Few are able to appreciate that our emotions are not the heart center we think it is but a product of our defensive thinking.
I hope that I can encourage you to become truly heart centered.
