I guess your ego still has a way to go and this is a classic ego response, sorry to say. It's kicked into self-preservation mode and is provoking an emotional response to what it perceives as a threat to its own survival. I'd guess that in your own personal definition of cosmic consciousness your ego is evaporated, or do you consider yourself ego-less?

As an observation of cause and consequence which may relate to any one of us, --
Those of us who have been raised in circumstances which involve being punished in some strict way for what we are told are "wrong" deeds, are likely to begin to think that we resist doing such deeds because if we don't we shall be punished.

The result of such thinking is that we may loose confidence in our ability to self regulate. We may actually become frightened to trust in ourselves in circumstances which seem to have no framework of imposed regulation. In this, as in many circumstances, the understanding support from others helping us to understand ourselves is really helpful.

We might think that this has little to do with spirituality-- I guess it depends upon how we each view "spirituality". But at the very least, such help and I also think the means and desire to understand ourselves as best as we are able, is greatly aided by empathy.

Yep. That edge is scary.

I used to call it the Terror Point... that caused an automatic snap back every time I got close to the opening into freedom.

Thing is... as you just keep on with your practice, eventually the fear fades away.
