Lightbulb Looking Good?

(A free verse poem I wrote in the last century)

What to wear (or not to?)
knowing clothes speak
complementing, betraying,
shielding, revealing
...ourselves?

Images - absorbed imperceptibly, constantly
- that we all 'buy'
shaping choices, constantly
pausing seldom to separate the cloth
from the person,
the body from the soul

Sleek skin, hollowed cheek, seductive mouth
image-selling, image-sought
and - if found - is prone to disappoint
since beautiful wrapping, once undone
often reveals an
unexpectedly vacant interior
....and a fool

A myriad of visual feasts
await to captivate,
mass-media tinsel
reflecting in its consumers.

Plainly-wrapped precious gifts
are rendered inferior,
perhaps never to be seen
....or shared
in a world that prefers
the beautiful-looking
to the beautiful.

I like that, I look good when I smile, so I wear a smile when I can.

Very nice poem, lots of truth and a great theme deftly put down on paper. Thanks. Joe.
