Militant Bishops !

Now, here's a thing. Church of England bishops are shaking off the slumber of centuries and starting to take on our extreme right-wing government over the social consequences of their policies, and their darts are striking home. Now some people say that there should be total separation between church and state but I don't see why that should be. Given that the Queen is Supreme Governor of the church and supposed to be apolitical, I wonder ......
About time they showed that they were good for something and remembered the teachings of Christ !

But they need to remember they don't speak for the whole of the UK, or even the whole of England... they speak for their part of it. We are not a christian country and it shouldn't be taken that he speaks for the people.

I can't quote but there was something said on R4 yesterday that implied he was speaking for the nation... because we are all christian.. aren't we?

But I don't have a problem with Rowen Williams speaking up, imho he's one of the "good-uns" in the church.

Tilia, we certainly need someone to provide opposition. Remember, also, that the Bishops sit in the Lords, so it is valid that they make political points. Believe me, this is the first and only time I have ever had anything good to say about the church. Anything and anyone who causes problems for Cameron is OK by me !

Church does what church think is right.

The Goverment does what the goverment think is right.

You really want to have 2 Organisations to have Power over you and your life? I guess history has shown quite a few times that a religious goverment or a goverment with a religous agenda always ends up doing the Wrongest choice.

Capitalism is fine, they just want our Money. We can deal with that. But the church also wants our Minds. Because all Abrahamic religions are designed to spread.

I don't see the church having power over people's lives now but they are part of Brit. society and so it is right that they should express an opinion in society. If you read the Archbishop's statement, he certainly hit the low points of govt. policy.

I agree with you, norseman.

Incidentally, I watched a series called Revelations last year with leaders of different religions discussing God and various life issues. I felt that Rowan Williams came over as a very compassionate and genuine person

He is rather weird. I have no problem with him speaking his mind but I think he's as clueless as the people he's criticizing tbh.

I like him, nice voice.

Hmmm, I kinda agreed with the guy on the news that said 'the Prime Minister doesn't tell him what to put in his sermans'.

So whilst I agreed with his position, I think perhaps he should butt out.
