Silenced Roots

Quote:
Vaietut Juuret - Silenced Roots- is a journey to own family history and roots. It is my story, but very similar to many other inhabitants of Lapland. Because of the last few centuries' assimilations, forest Sámi people's ancestors did not talk about their Sámi roots. Knowledge about the origins disappeared from the next generations. However, through genealogy, many have now discovered their roots. This documentary film talks about one Sámi group, forest Sámi, their status, and their lives.
Just came across this.
Wow – ain’t that the truth!
Looks like I am related to almost all of these old Forest Saami families from the areas mentioned, yet grandmother never ever spoke about them - as though that side of her family had never existed.
Glad they are coming out now.

I can’t call myself a Saami or even a Forest Saami, since I did not live within that community, nor could I therefore wear their clothing – that is just not done. I can only talk about my Saami connections, which on one side (maternal grandmother’s) seems to be to the Finnish Forest Saami and on the other side to the Norwegian Saami (maternal grandfather’s), perhaps through the Valkeapää family relatedness.

Still, the heritage lives on within the psycho-spiritual reality orientation and the shamanic multidimensional experience.

Gaup's film about shamanism should be interesting:
