P.S. These literal meanings are probably abbreviated and there are probably more in-depth versions.
I just googled and I read that the first character is actually "hand", not "ox" ...

Looking at the hand, looking at the nail ...?

You are aware that Paleo Hebrew is simply the Phoenician alphabet appropriated by the ancient Jews when they began to write because they needed an alphabet that would fulfill the single purpose of replicating the sounds of the spoken language?

Ha,
I forgot about the Google machine.
I pulled my info from a piece of paper I copied off a wonky website way back in the days of dial-up and AOL.
But I still enjoy pulling it out and changing my perspective.

P.S. Aw yeah, I see my paper has hand also.Must have just been operator error.

I know next to nothing of Phoenicians or where the Paleo Hebrew language came from.
I only know a little about any language but that seems to describe how things are spread and adopted.
It still blows my mind how interesting the Hebrew language is.
Only knowing the English language I find it fascinating to try and have a better understanding of a
time and place and original language scripture was written from,to gain a different perspective.

Paleo Hebrew is not a language. It is simply an alphabet.

Thanks.
Yes, I see my error.
So the ancient Paleo Hebrew script/alphabet the Hebrew's used was borrowed from the Phoenicians.
So the modern Hebrew script/alphabet , did that come from somewhere else or did the Hebrew's create it?

'Literal meaning' is not the same as a transliteration.

Let me explain.

In Thai, Free is written as ฟรี.

If you go to see how the word is pronounced, it sounds almost like our word for 'free'. The reason for this, is that Thai did not have a word for 'free' so they used their alphabet to come up with a word that sounded like our word for 'free'!

Back to ฟรี.

means teeth and makes the sound "f".
The Thai letter means boat and makes the sound "r" (transliterates into our language as).

The character sitting above is a vowel that sounds like 'ee'.

When you put these sounds together, ฟรี sounds to us like 'free'.

When I first read this, I believed for a long time that the Tetragrammaton, as reflective in this verse by the usage of the word Jehovah, had not been used till the Exodus.
