Is this something we just make up?

Hi everyone. What I am talking about is the idea that we are supposed to be doing something with life. Are we really supposed to be doing something with life or is that something we just make up?
I started asking myself this question about 13 years ago. That was when I got out of high school and I started spiritually awakening instead of pursuing college or a career.
I think that what it boils down to is you can do whatever you want with life. If you are happy doing it that's another story. Any additional thoughts would be appreciated.

From reading a 1000 books, kidding ---actually starting over 50 years ago reading my mom's Reincarnation books, cuz she had an NDE...
Each life is different.
So you may meet a person who's life was designed, planned, chosen to be
lazy and taken care of....lol...a spoiled Prince or a monk living in silence his entire life.
Sometimes we rest, some lives we take on may challenges to overcome.
Another life very socially productive...another a doctor, another the invalid patient.
"Purposes'' change, from my understanding.

Robert Schwartz helps us to get this better...and many other authors, hypnotists, NDErs, mediums etc.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

It does not have to be and either/or approach. The spiritual can and should be integrated with regular life.

...I was in a Boston Book store, Cambridge - gee, probably 1978, what a day, I digress :)...I pulled a Buddhism book
out opened it and there was a poem, perfect for me...and maybe appropriate for you, RM, I dunno.
I will try to piece the essence together.

Here I sit
In the corner of a doorway
shunned by men
as I am held at my Mother's breast.
Passers by sneer at me.
While I am drinking my Blessed Mother's milk.
They walk by moving far from me
As I sit in a corner being nurtured by the Divine Mother
as content as any man could be.

I interpret your situation, of wondering about the purpose of (your) life, as a message from your inner-guidance that you aren't yet doing with your life what you came here for.

So, if I were in your situation, I would start looking to find out that purpose.

I believe that you can think about it, can ask around, go to dogmas and gurus, but ultimately the best answer for you can be found only by turning inwards, and accessing your own inner source of knowledge and guidance, the one that messaged you that you don't know yet the purpose of (your) life.

"... as content as any man could be."

To me, learning something I need to learn, then successfully applying it, brings incomparably more contentment than doing nothing.

I understand that. I just expressed, what makes me most content, contrasting it with that quote.

I thought the quote to be about surrendering to a Divine caretaker, and I inferred to be related to doing nothing, thinking nothing, and such spiritual approaches; what a baby in his mother's arms seems to do (I think he does much more). But, I accept that I may have misunderstood the quote.

By the way, what was he doing?
