Christianity emerged after the death of Jesus as an off-shoot of Judaism. Although the followers of Jesus were called Christians in the first few centuries 'Christianity' as a Religion did not emerge until much later when it eventually separated from Judaism and became its own Religion.....

Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews....
He told the Israelite spiritual leaders off at Matt 23--he assured them they were cut off in verse 38 of being Gods chosen unless they did verse 39-to this day they have outright refused. They gathered in houses at that point. But a new religion began. After Jesus appointed Saul(Paul) he set up congregations( Acts 24:5)Acts16:5)

Christianity as a Religion started when the followers of 'Christ' separated completely from Judaism a long time after the death of Jesus, and it's roots are in Judaism.
Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews....

Jesus wouldnt let his followers be apart of a religion that was standing in blatent opposition of his Fathers will. It started while Jesus was on earth. They gathered in houses. Then Paul set up congregations.

Reminding about the warning Yahushua, who was resurrected by the heavenly father, to be an eternal king & priest, gave:
“See to it that no one deceives you. for many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ, and they shall lead many astray"
Matthew 24:4-5 (also passage 11)

The idiom "Come in my name" in this context, is On behalf of someone or oneself. Saying they represent The messiah.
The translation of christ Χριστός (Christos)
Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular
Strong's 5547: Anointed One; the Messiah, the Christ. From chrio; Anointed One, i.e.
To anoint is to set apart, another words for chosen but usually in religious context.

Other words for Mathhew 24:4-5: many will come to represent me, saying they have been chosen.
Paul/Shaul is probably one of them.

They were Jewish until they listened to Jesus. All saw what occurred to those who listened to the Israelite teachers and those who listened to Jesus= 2 opposite paths. The Romans had Jerusalem surrounded, they couldnt break through, they left for no reason, those who listened to Jesus left the city, 70 ce the romans wiped out about 1 million of those who listened to the Israelite teachers. Do you think Jesus wanted them listening to the Israelite teachers? They were apostocised, they didnt even recognize the one whom God sent to them. They turned their hearts to hatred for Jesus and taught lies about him.

Yes the Jewish were Gods chosen until Matt 23: when Jesus told them off and told them they were cut off. The renting of the banner the moment Jesus died signified that fact as well.
