Ignoring the idea that while the physical body sleeps we are consciously active elsewhere, is a lack of conscious awareness in deep sleep the same as a change in identity?
Or is it just a temporary change in the condition of our identity?
And when we wake up, we are still the same individual as we were the previous day. We have not become someone different overnight.
The awareness which gazes out of my eyes today is the same as the awareness which gazed out of my eyes sixty years ago. The nature of my vehicles (the mind, the emotions, the physical body) has obviously changed, but the awareness remains as it always has been.
This awareness is the constant factor in an ever-changing physical existence. And (for me) the spiritual search is the process of identification with this unchanging awareness rather than the ever-changing and temporary vehicles through which awareness functions.
But this awareness is so close to us that we usually overlook it and we seek elsewhere.
