No, I'm not joking. It may not be long before algorithms are developed to translate dolphin language by computer. This will open the door to understanding the extent of their intelligence - but rather than just believing it to be the case based on observation, it may soon be possible to translate their calls and eventually to talk with them:

i read a story in reader's digest about a severely autistic boy. the parents said he never spoke. they tried everything. one day they took him to sea world. he sat down at the edge of the dolphin pool and the parents watched, amazed as a dolphin came up out of the water and 'spoke', made clicking sounds at the boy and the boy made sounds back.

they were amazed becasue he had never uttered a word, but also, the dolphin would make sounds then the boy would as if they were having a conversation.

they began bringing him to the pool every day. the trainer said it was the same dolphin that seemed drawn to the boy.

after some time the boy began to communicate with his parents.

It would be wonderful to talk with them. They show so much understanding of us....why should they? But they do. And they show compassion and understanding towards dogs too, and probably other species.
