Surprised no one's mentioned this was first raised by Shakespeare. Like all great playwrights he was pretty astute with characters.
All the world's a stage
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts...

Sure, many people are puppets but more to the consumerist High Priesthood than God. (More likely the 'devil' doing its work on earth pretty well)!!
Spiritual development is surely about cutting free of those strings without becoming a Pinocchio. Become akin to Shakespeare rather than one of his players.
When you find out where God really is - and listen/observe - It'll lead you in the right direction.

I have plenty to say on this subject - but, don't want to say anything, so haven't.
You all are doing so well.
What my 'traditional' answer is - 'We can say all we would like to you'...
even Shakespeare who some have considered if not an Awakened person, certainly one who experienced Cosmic Consciousness, when the Doors of perception were opened for him...
'BUT, nothing compares to going within in stillness and silence and having this revealed to you personally.'
Oh, and what a moment that is!

If it is considered a play ...then there is more to realize..
What is the stage itself?
Who is in the audience...
Who wrote the play?
Can the players improvise?
Is the play repeated over and over again?
Would there be different or the same actors?
If the metaphor is a *movie...
Who is behind the projector...
Who placed the blank white screen ...
is it real or not real...
Who made the seats ?
-the projector itself ...who sits in the seats.
What is the light beam.
What is the Source of this light necessary for the image?
What is more real? The actors, the story or the feelings elicited by the story by the watchers or Watcher?
And so on.
 Good stuff...and it's all revealed within inside.

This earth is a test world, and it's all just God Truth. Truth is the master which God discovered himself to be, we are here to discover the same. He/Truth is the actor and the producer, He dresses in different forms yet He has no form.

Sorry, I have a comment..A test? So there is a pass and fail?I don't see life here as a test; a learning experience, a growth experience, yes.

It's all of it. Noone is passing or failing us, noone judges us, it's us. To not fall in ego, attachment, jealousy and envy, lust, greed etc and to be a good soul, we ourselves reap the rewards and rise to greater heights whilst keeping our head on the ground in humility. |

We are here to experience, to learn and observe. We redo. In essence we reexperience. We return with a clean slate with no memory of any experience.  We do not know what we will do even if we (already) know (of) the experience beforehand. So in this way, it is not like a play.
