Bewitched and the Repressed Goddess

Ever watch that old TV series Bewitched? Husband Darin, a mortal, marries Samantha, a witch. She tells him the truth on their wedding night and he forbids her to use her magic powers. This she does in a spirit of self-sacrifice, bowing to the ego of her husband. This series came out at the same time as women's liberation, as a kind of tongue-in-cheek commentary on woman as all powerful, yet subjugating herself for her man.

I think there is a lot more going on in this show than meets the eye.

**** York (the first Darrin) when he was incapacitated and couldn't work anymore, used his fame to help homeless people. He seemed such a sweet guy - please don't be mean.

What amazes me about Elizabeth Montgomery is how great she looked and how much younger than her biological age. She was acting decades before with big stars. She was an icon.

Not that it matters that you didn't go into a rant or semi-rant about the plight of us goddesses of the world, given the thread title. I take things lightly now that I'm older. I do realize it's not all about looks, but Hollywood, well y'know. I apologize.

She certainly was an icon! So amazing.

**** York is truly a great man.

Maybe I should rant afterall. Rantrantrant

Samantha the Goddess...hmmm... What aspect of Goddess would she be? Goddess of what?

Her character was imitated in I Dream of Genie (a lot of it seems such an obvious ripoff - however imitation is the best flattery... and Asher who directed and produced Bewitched worked on the I Love Lucy show and some of those skits were used in Bewitched...so no pointing fingers).

She was always careful not to tell lies, was always helpful to everybody. She really expressed a lot of spiritual qualities. And then there was Serena, her alter-ego - naughty naughty Serena, the sexualized Aphrodite to Samantha's wise Athena...

And then Endora - Kali for sure! Medussa, if you take the Greek version. (I never knew she was gay iolite.)

Yeah, I grew up watching that show, love watching the re-runs. Love Endora, Uncle Arthur and Dr. Bombay. When those three show up in the same show -- priceless!! Oh, I forgot about Aunt Clara and Esmeralda they were great too!!
