I read the heck out of his book "The Awakening of Intelligence." Had good and bad experiences from that. Some trippy experiences as well. By myself and with others.

Now days I would not say the self vanishes. The self is polished, woken up, born again. We are always present. As what is the question. The self does not disappear or vanish, the self discards or sheds what is not needed.

In his Notebook and Journal, there were some entries that recorded lucid moments of the selfless state. The descriptions were quite compelling.

The self cannot discard anything. It's the consciousness that discards what is not needed, and it is then that time and space disappears.

Eternity is timelessness. "Can you live that way? Please give your heart to find out." Krishnamurti implored.

It is my understanding that every Theravadan teacher has at least attained 2nd or 3d path before starting to really teach on a regular basis. This means that they at least know the territory one may find him or herself in when following the steps as the buddha explained them in the pali canon.

Depending on where you are on this earth there may be a few meditation center's or even monasteries that you could check out. As always some discernment is needed if you want to study with a teacher.
Different teachers utilize very different methods, even after enlightenment it seems.

A wise sage was once asked if there were any enlightened beings. His response was: "There is One".

Another enlightened (!! ) master once said that strictly speaking there are no enlightened people, just enlightened activity.
