The word Christ comes from Christos a Greek word meaning 'Anointed' It is the equivalent of the word Messiah in Hebrew, therefore you will find it first in the Ot.

What I meant was that the Angels implied that Jesus was the Christ.

But wait, before the Angels spoke to the shepherds there was the Annunciation. Whereby Gabriel told the Virgin Mary that she would give birth to the Son Of God.

Yes Mary was obviously the first to know but according to Scriptures didn't fully understand until Elizabeth (The Visitation) acknowledged that the child She was to have (Jesus ) was the Messiah as Her (Elizabeth's) unborn Son (John the Baptist ) lept in Her womb....
There are obviously varied accounts some say Elizabeth was actually the first person to know because Mary hadn't known She was pregnant nor had the message from the Angel Gabriel until after Her visit to Elizabeth

But regardless of whether Mary or Elizabeth were the first to know, it was Gabriel who first stated that Mary's son will be the Messiah/Christ.

It depends on what you personally believe.... Then we have the Story of Her being impregnated through the holy spirit, wouldn't He/She have known.
I personally don't need to understand the ins and outs of the Stories but I understand some do.
