The Ghost aboard the "Catherine and Hannah"

This seems to be a true story. References will be found at the foot of this posting.

Robert Bruce, born Torquay about 1798, was first mate aboard a barquentine trading between Liverpool at St.John’s, New Brunswick, Canada in the year 1828.

During the voyage westwards five or six weeks out, nearing the eastern portion of the Newfoundland Banks, the captain and first mate went on deck at noon to take an observation of the sun, and then both went below to make their calculations. They sat in separate state rooms. The mate’s calculation varied considerably from the dead reckoning and he called out to the captain, “I make our latitude and longitude so-and-so. Can that be right sir?”

Receiving no reply he went to the captain’s room and saw a person whom he assumed to be the captain writing on the captain’s slate. The man looked up and to his astonishment he saw the features of a total stranger. The first mate rushed on deck and reported the matter to the captain adding, “I am not a believer in ghosts but I would rather not face going down there alone again.”

The ship was searched for a stowaway but nobody alien to the crew was aboard. The captain then went below with the first mate to look around and picked up his own slate.
“Is that your writing Mr. Bruce?” he asked. In plain legible characters the words “Steer north-west” were written. The captain made first mate Bruce, the second mate and every member of the crew who knew how to write copy out the message for comparison. Nothing matched even closely.

Since the wind was free the captain was intrigued enough to order a change of course to the north-west and sent a dependable lookout aloft. At about three that afternoon the lookout reported an iceberg ahead and what looked like some kind of ship close by it. The captain saw through the telescope that the casualty was dismasted, appeared frozen to the ice and there were people aboard. He sent out his ship’s boats to pick up the survivors.

The vessel had been bound from Quebec to Liverpool with passengers, had run into the icefield, become entrapped and had spent many days in freezing temperatures above a gradually sinking hull. All her provisions and most of the fresh water had been used up. The crew and passengers had already lost all hope of being saved and were resigned to death.

As the third lifeboat came alongside the barquentine the first mate caught a glimpse of a man’s face and started back in consternation. It was the very face he had seen several hours before at his captain’s writing desk. After questioning the survivor and his ship’s captain it was established that the survivor had been in a deep sleep on deck at midday. When he awoke, he informed his captain “It’s OK. They are sending a ship for us.”

His captain asked how he knew that, and the survivor said he had dreamt it, and described in detail the ship that would be arriving, and when it finally did arrive the ship matched the dream version perfectly.

The survivor who had been asleep was asked to write the phrase "Steer north-west" on the captain's slate and his writing matched the original inscription perfectly.

CONCLUSION

This story was first recounted in the book by Robert Dale Owen (1801-1877) Footfalls on the Boundary of Another World published in London, 1860. It can be read online at pages 242-249 (quod.lib.umich.edu version). The author states: “The narrative was communicated to me by Captain J.S. Clarke of the schooner Julia Hallock trading in 1859 between New York and Cuba who had it directly from the first mate himself, with whom he sailed for seventeen months in the years 1836 and 1837. In July 1859 Captain Clarke allowed the author to use his name as a reference for the truth of the facts.

The names of the two vessels involved in the story were not mentioned and so this writer searched the Internet. In Marine Casualties for 1828 (online) there is an entry for 21 April 1828 to the effect that “the schooner Superb, UK and Irish flag, collided with an iceberg and sprang a leak. She was abandoned and some of her crew were rescued by the British flag Catherine and Hannah. The wreck sank five days later while being towed into Cape Cod. No other ships were reported to have been in trouble in an icefield that year.
