Here's one thing I remember from when I first started incorporating effortless practice. It would be during the transition from breath to nothing and I knew I was on the cusp because it would "feel" like a "falling" into nothingness with no end in sight and it's quite pleasant. What I finally figured out is that too has to be let go and then I would be "there". The next challenge is staying "there" but just like anything it becomes easier with practice.
I don't even know if I'm conveying it in meaningful language because it is beyond language and might be different depending on the practitioner, but what I will say is the propensity of mind is to move towards the desirable and away from the undesirable and that has to be overcome. That's the challenge and it's not a small one but is within reach.
In the talk I linked Dr. Richard Davidson talks about the Buddhist monks he brought into his neuroscience lab and monitored with EEG & fMRI during meditation. Monks with tens of thousands of hours of practice and apparently that state of being is totally effortless for them because through practice they are intimately familiar with that "space".

Right - I like the phrase 'calm abiding' (or samatha) that you've mentioned, I think that's a great way of approaching it. Or 'allow everything to be as it is', as Adyashanti puts it, nothing is grasped and nothing is pushed away. If only it were so simple in practice as it is in theory, but such is life
