Lightbulb The Lost Cause

She couldn't sleep. She hadn't realised it was that serious! Her future now looked uncertain and there was so much she wanted to achieve.

Yes she'd heard about climate change - something about global warming and countries not doing much about it but it all seemed so complex and didn't feel like it had much to do with her life.

It was by chance that she had idly changed TV channels and became captivated by the current plight of polar bears. With concern she learnt that the sea ice - on which the polar bears depended for their hunting habitat - was melting at an alarming rate so threatening their survival.

The programme was implying that freak weather was the new normal and set to become increasingly more unstable, which seemed to tally with global news reports - certainly there seemed to be far more heat waves, storms, droughts and floods. She tried to contain her horror as the various models and scenarios, used to depict global warming, revealed its predicted repercussions including that for our water cycle and oceans. No...it wouldn't come to that! It can't! She switched off.

She put on some music to allay her anxious mind but it didn't work. Her mind was racing now with future concerns and possibilities playing out in her head. She 'got it' - the urgency of environmental protesters harping on about climate change. Would she join their movement? She had to do something and recalled being inspired by Rosa Parks, the American activist in the civil rights movement. One person could make a difference.

The dawn chorus awoke her from what little but deep sleep she had managed to snatch. Suddenly an idea, a direction came to her! She got dressed, consulted a map and headed out. That Friday, and every Friday, Greta Thunberg began sitting outside the Swedish Parliament as part of a climate strike.
