my guide
I am trying to contact my guide through meditation....is this the only way to contact my guide? How would I know that my guide has contacted me?

I would work on 'clear knowing' I think everyone has the ability to develop this - you have to clear the mind in meditation, try thinking on image from the past/present that makes you smile - one 'still image' hold for 10 seconds, then again, then breathe and with mind clear, maybe stare into the nothingness at say top of the mind - and do nothing - its like developing the gut feeling - others here will guide you with different ideas...
When it happens, you will know - and keep chatting to them 'your spiritual support' - it seems a one way conversation, but it wont be, suddenly something will happen... and work on raising your energy vibrations, 'vibes'...
