All I know of my Irish is they are not Catholic. They are Protest-ants.
They will march and protest pretty much anything.LOL
Spirit animals, is such a big topic I don't know if I can pull out any differences.
It is pretty much the same with different words.
So much of this is blurry and intertwined when talking of Spirit.
It seems Medicine men have a stricter Spirit animal knowledge and have to act
according to their visions and dreams. These practices leak down to us common folk.
I find the subject of 'suffering' bothersome.
In all Native practices I have been around we 'willingly' suffer to gain insights and knowledge into the Spirit realms.
Lets take Buddhism, where it is the goal to end suffering. These two paths maybe different but may lead to a similar outcome IDK.
Through a purification(sweat) lodge, we take a path through suffering which brings us into surrendering to the Spirits.
We have a common prayer strategy, which is to ask in general for Health,Help, and Happiness.
Though we can get into specifics as they arise. In these times of suffering we become willing to receive Help from
Spirit whether it be from Rock/Earth, Fire, Water, Air or W,N,E,S Sky, Earth of a positive nature.
Wakan Tanka which flows through everything can send or work through anything to bring about the help as long as we are surrendered.
In this way I have witnessed many Animal Spirit Helpers work medicine. Once it was a Sasquatch that was a major help.
I don't believe it was a totem or belonging to anyone's medicine bundle of anyone present, I do believe it was related to the ceremonial area
which revealed itself later. The area was the site of a Longhouse who's totem was of the Elk and the Sasquatch. This was a Power animal of an area and was only 3 foot tall but still shook the ground when she danced.
So we practice suffering to merge the realms of the physical and Spiritual through surrender and acceptance.
The Vision Quest is also a suffering practice. As is the Sundance.
Let's say to learn appreciation of Water. After a 4 day fast appreciation comes very naturally. You cannot learn this type of appreciation in a seminar.
