What?
Now I'm sounding like someone else off topic...
My sister and I agree now - that area was big in supernatural events.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru.

true dat
(Maybe the happenings are more about the individuals than the area? That's something for discussion in its own thread, away from this one.)

There were a lot of Supernatural events that happened in that greater area. Many of them of the early 1800's time period probably attributed to that of "Modern Day Spiritualism" coming to fruition.
Being this about the History of Spiritualism, I can not see, why what was going in that area in the 1840's, as some historians have indicated when they have discuss that event and other events of history.
Most historians mention the canal but I do not think any of them ever mentioned the mesmeric feel a person gets on riding on one of those old canal boats, especially if it was being pulled by mules, etc.
Another historian claims some of the farmers in that area grew Peppermint which probably had an effect on people. Then there must have still have been some Groves which some might have gone to meditate or to be just alone. For example, nearby was the Sacred Grove near Joseph Smith's home which many still visit every year. It was Joseph Smith Junior who had his first vision 28 years before the Fox Sisters and Mother in that grove.
As for the canal, it was used for hauling merchandise and people and also the printed word along with ideas. One group that moved westward around about the time of the Mormons (to be) was the group that would later be referred to as the Oneida Community. I would say that group may have had one of the greater influences on the various groups of that area but is rarely mentioned. I was always impressed with their extensive Library. The Syracuse University's Bird Library, the Special Collections Research Center, deals extensively about them.
That greater area had been the 'Frontier' but after it opened up, it moved forward very progressively. Roads made of planks, called Plank Roads were started to be 'laid' in the 1840's while new ideas were being perpetuated by the Oneida Community and various other groups. When the Fox Sisters and Mother began Rapping Mediumship, it is no wonder it caught on as rapidly as it did.

Next: back to Emmanuel Swedenborg.
Swedenborg entertained Spiritual just as we do on SpiritualForums. Something he wrote was:
" The human mind is of three degrees, which are the celestial, spiritual, and natural. In the first degree is the soul, in the second, is the spirit or the mind, and in the third, is the body. "

For me, Animism seems to be the basic for all of the other religions. In the West, it is virtually never mentioned. I came across Animism in Asia when Ex-pats would talk about Buddhism and their disdain for Asian Buddhists because of their intertwining Buddhism with Animism. From this, I began looking at Buddhism.
At the same time, I noticed the similarities between Modern Day Spiritualism and Animism. The similarities seem to be uncanny.
By studying the history of Modern Day Spiritualism, I could see how this came about.

Lets have this as an open discussion as we try to unravel what happened and the repercussions.

March 31, 1848 was the eve of Halloween which has many implications for how 'things' spread from one society to another.
In 1845, Ireland began getting ravished by the Irish Potato Famine. Irish people fled their homelands and many ended up in America. Some journeyed into the wilderness by going to New York City, then up the Hudson River to Albany to transverse westward by the Erie Canal..... right pass where Modern Day Spiritualism began!
That land did not know much about Halloween at that time but after the Irish and other immigrants began to transverse that land, it became known. Known not as we know it now but probably a version with overtures of the Celtic celebration of Samhain.
The Celts believed on that day, the boundaries between the World of the living and the World of the dead overlap and was the optimum time for the ghost of the dead to return to Earth.
...................Uncannily, Modern Day Spiritualism was 'born' that day.
