How does Hinduism/Hindus view Enlightenment?

What is the general opinion amongst Hindus about Enlightenment or Self Realisation? How do many Hindus view the path of trying to unite with God by meditation?

Does anyone have any feedback from Hindus about this? I have stated before that I thought Hindus were mystics. I thought all Hindus were trying to unite with God by meditating. I thought they were all trying to reach enlightenment.
