Brahmakumaris on 7 steps to stay calm in the midst of chaos

The Bhagavad Gita states that mental equanimity is yoga and leads to efficiency in action. However it is a challenge for most people to be calm and mentally equanimous in the midst of chaos and adversity.

I found this informative article by Sister Pratibha Daya of the Brahmakumaris on staying calm in the midst of chaos...

Traffic control – That is, traffic control of your mind. Get into the habit of taking mental breaks for a minute or so, to notice the world around you. This will make you aware of and help you put a stop to the stream of thoughts in your head. It helps to focus on a mental image you associate with peace and calm, or to play some music that soothes you when you take these breaks. ~ Sister Pratibha Daya

Useful insights by Sister Pratibha. Thanks for sharing.

Examining agitation as opposed to tranquil equipoise, it seems natural to blame thought turbulence. However, what is the cause of thought, other than heart’s desire? It can be material, intellectual, spiritual … the heart seeks, mind attempts to fulfil the desire. If thoughts gain momentum, word and action follows.

Sans desire, as related to mind-body craving, we abide in a stillness continuum, free of thought. Mind then is an instrument, employed if and when needed. This becomes our default orientation.

Mindfulness, watchfulness, awareness, self-aware, witness consciousness … we can use such terms, which however acquire significance only when no ripples arise in our heart. This does not suggest a withdrawal from life or negation, rather to the contrary it is fullness of emptiness, radiant, blissful, humming aliveness.

As such, in my view, we should get to the source, our heart centre. The rest will take care of itself.
