That reminded me in a way of the guardians at the entrances of some of the temples in Nepal --- some Buddhist, some Hindu, etc.

You will find these Guardians standing in front of some Theravada Buddhist Temples. You probably have seen these chaps. They stand at attention in front of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

As for the Temple of the Emerald Buddha:

One day I was wandering around minding my own business when a Taxi cab driver pulled up beside me and asked me for directions. He had in the back an English speaking foreigner and a female National. The foreigner wanted to go to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha but did not know how to say it in the cab driver's language. The woman he was with, obviously admired him, but had no idea where he wanted to go. So the taxi driver asked me to speak to the foreigner in which I found out where he wanted to go. It took me a few moments to formulated the words for the taxi driver to understand. When I told him, the taxi cab driver could not believe it was so simple.

Seeing the Emerald Buddha was always a treat. Seeing foreigners disrespect the Buddha by pointing their feet at the statue and also trying to take pictures and/or videos even after being told not to, was something that amazed me. But the issues generally began before the visitors entered the grounds when they were told that their clothing was inappropriate.

The place is like a Magickal Kingdom to me. I always would arrive by a River Taxi Boat. Nearby is a fairly large Temple. The 'Head' Monk has visited me numerous times in the USA and has invited me to stay at 'his' Temple when ever I am there. I find some of the kindnesses of the Buddhist monks to be an enjoyable experience.
