climbing and hiking

Two nights ago my dream was that I was hiking and I went into a cave that was carved out to go up in a tunnel that had bars you had to navigate in order to get up the tunnel (like metal bars and gymnastics). I found that it was easy for me to get through and it was nonproblem to go up the tunnel. Well an ex boyfriend said he wanted to hike and camp with me to talk and I reluctantly agreed. I packed a backpack and went to the tunnel again to make sure I could go up because I didn't want to seem like I couldnt. The extra width of the backpack made it hard for me to squeeze between the bars. At some point I took the backpack off and was like... forget it! And left it there. I don't think I ever met up with my ex.

Perhaps you've had this same thought, it sounds like your ex partner (or circumstances surrounding him) was represented in the increased luggage that burdened you, and made it difficult for you to navigate the tunnel. In its simplest form, the dream could suggest that you're no longer being burdened by the past and know when to drop the luggage you don't need. Alternatively, perhaps you find it difficult to move forward sometimes in certain other areas of your life, because of reminders, lessons or burdens you still carry from the past. You may struggle to the point of abandoning things, therefore not getting through the tunnel to confront the difficulties (ex) of your past.

the "baggage" (backpack) seems to relate to [your idea of] the ex.
you had already navigated the tunnels within the cave (within a hill?),
so i don't know why you'd wanted to prove to yourself that you could.
i imagine that the ex was unaware of the cave and tunnel, and sought
to hike/camp with you on a hillside [i say hill since you'd specified "up"].
you know of a [hidden?] method for "ascension", but your ex was
interested in a communal experience, probably without that shortcut.

since you'd not met up with the ex again, i expect that you might have
a revisitation to this scenario at some point.
