Lol, let me tell you a true story.

Once my husband and I were travelling across a portion of the United States. We happened to be on an Indian reservation when we needed to stop for gasoline and a potty break and some lunch. We found a touristy stop with the big gas stations, souvenir shops, Indian blankets spread out for sale, the whole tourist trap thing.

After we filled up with gas I suggested to my husband that we get off the beaten track and see if we could find an authentic Indian restaurant. We did find one just a few miles down the road.

We entered the building and there were quite a few Indians in the restaurant, we were the only white people. As we walked in, there was a hush that went through the whole restaurant.

We ordered and ate with an eerie silence that pervaded our entire stay.

When we paid and left, there were 4 big trucks full of Indians outside to escort us out of their territory.

No, I don't think I would feel safe with the Indians. Many on the reservation, (often called the rez) hate whites. And I beg Indians who frequent this place to deny what I say is true.

Yes, these people were horribly treated and left to watch their wives and children starve. I have read a lot of the horrific things the whites did to them. Killed their buffalo, forcibly took their children from them to "civilize" them in white schools, slaughtered whole villages. It makes me so sad.

I hold no grudge against any race. I just feel a sadness that this distinct race of people can't forgive and move on.

On this thread there are many that talk about the Indians and their spirituality. Sadly, I feel most have lost that.

It was in New Mexico.

And I also had dealings with a son in law who came from a reservation in Montana. No, I am not judging all native peoples. But there are many, many who feel this way. I was in association with my son in law for about 10 years. I have a granddaughter who is half Chippewa-Chree.

Now imagine a couple from a reservation, with children, going to a town anywhere else in New Mexico to have a dinner in a restaurant. Think they would be treated nicely by the white guys?

I once had a coworker, who married a woman in the US. She was of asian heritage. According to my coworker, she refused to leave the car at any gas station in the entire southern USA. Now consider how a rez girl would feel.

violence against native women especially, is twice the national rate of non indian peoples. perhaps that is one of the causes of mistrust.

a violence against women act was finally passed by obama that includes violence on the rez. before this act, they weren't protected.

Thanks for explaining elisi :)

It is sad how past misdeeds still affect the present day...but I totally get it. Id be pretty narked if I had lost all my natural heritage and day to day spirituality. Im sad that britain was invaded and the Celts have long vanished and our welsh language is almost instinct...I dont hate the anglo saxons for it, but maybe I would be bitter if it happened as recently as what happened to american natives.
