Post Buddha-Spoken Sutra on Great Dragon Krkala’s Victory over Exterior-Path Practitioners

Alternative Title :
Buddha-Spoken Sutra on Great Dragon Krkala’s Dharani and His Victory over Exterior-Path Practitioners

An English Translation of 佛說俱利伽羅大龍勝外道伏陀羅尼經

(Taisho Tripitaka 1206)

Thus I have heard: At one time, The Buddha was in the great city Raja-griha.

At that time, Ratna-ketu (Treasure-Banner) Dharani Bodhisattva asked the Buddha :

"Why does great dragon Krkala hold a sharp sword in his mouth, and wrap his four legs around the sword?"

The Buddha told Ratna-ketu Dharani Bodhisattva :

"At one time in the past, in the highest Heaven of Form Realm (Akanistha), in Mahesvara (Great Omnipotent God)’s Knowledge Victory City, when Moveless Luminous King (Acalanatha Vidya-Raja) was debating with a number of Exterior-path practitioners, both sides manifested myriads of miraculous transformations to prove their wisdom.”

"At that time, Moveless Luminous King (Acalanatha Vidya-Raja) transformed himself into a Wisdom Fire sword."

"Meanwhile, there were 95 types of Exterior-path practitioners. Their Leader, whose name is Wisdom Achievement, also transformed himself into a Wisdom Fire sword."

"Thereupon, Moveless Luminous King transformed again, from the Wisdom Fire sword into a great dragon called Krkala, whose four legs were transformed from the four Luminous Kings - Subduing the Three Worlds Luminous King (Trailokya Vijaya-raja), Kundali Luminous King, Yamantaka Luminous King, and Vajra-yaksa Luminous King."

"On his neck there was a lotus named Wisdom Fire, containing a word 'Krkala'. He was one hundred thousand yojanas in height, and from his mouth, he spurted out a breath like two trillion thunders roaring simultaneously."

"Having heard that sound, those Exterior-path practitioners and demon kings all abandoned their wicked doubts and incorrect adherence.”

The Buddha then spoke a Dharani:

"Namo sidhi sidhi susidhi sidhi kala laya
kuyam samma masli
acama sidhi svaha"

"The power of this Dharani can eliminate all inauspiciousness and subdue demon kings."

"If a person is being disturbed by an evil spirit, write down his name and chant this Dharani towards it 21 times, the evil spirit will suddenly be burned."

"Avoid the five pungencies(*), wine and meat(*), keep yourself away from women and defiled things, and recite this Dharani repeatedly with a single mind, all your wishes will definitely be fulfilled.”

(* The five pungencies: shallot, leek, garlic, scallion and hingu)

(* Meat: flesh of any animal, including bird, fish, pig, cow, etc.)

“The power, virtues and merits of this Dharani can make trees blossom in a non-flowering season, turn the four oceans into four mountains, or transform Sumeru Mountain King into an ocean. It can also make ice burn like oil, or make the hardest wood as soft as water.”

“With this Dharani, you can make things happen according to your will, just like what the Bhagavan can do.”

The Buddha then spoke these verses :

"Those who uphold and practice this teaching will be like the Bhagavan.
They will be able to attain supreme Samadhis of Bodhisattva level.
If one recites, or keeps being mindful of the name of dragon Krkala,
in his present life his fears and demonic obstructions will all be eliminated,
and in his next life he will be reborn in the Ultimate Bliss World.”

After the Buddha had spoken this Sutra, all the demon kings and the 95 great dragon kings were greatly delighted. They accepted the teaching with faith and began practicing it respectfully.
