quick sketch of a Schnauzer in pastel (from imagination)

There is definitely something to be said for using artist quality materials! Pricey but after paying my dues with cheap stuff (even kid's things you'd get in a dollar store) I'm liking the results. I had just intended on playing around with a piece of scrap paper but silly me I always have to draw something.

Only good thing with using cheap materials (aside from cost) is that it forces me to really work hard and learn the techniques without cheating - because quality paints/pastels and papers go on magically by themselves as smooth as butter.

I also started with cheap canvases, paints, brushes, and decided a few years ago to begin working with better quality materials as well. Brushes depends. If cheap ones work, I'm fine with that.
But using better quality canvas makes a helluva difference when painting. I actually think it could be slightly cheaper in the sense you need to use a little less paint to get the same result. Cheap canvas often also isn't tightened properly or the frame isn't straight.
When it comes to paints -and likely pencils, pastels etc as well- is better UV resistance, better pigments so longer lasting results, and simply more joy because it works better :)

Another reason I changed over is that if I sell something I don't want it to be a **** frame or to have the work fade over the years because the pigments are cheap.
You can then also ask more to cover the cost.

Beautiful, real like.

You have some unbelievable talent!

Have you ever thought of creating and designing your own tarot or oracle deck?
