Yogi Philosophy

Being “spiritual” does not mean that you don’t make any mistakes, as mistakes are really lessons yet to be learned. I give myself permission to make mistakes as long as those mistakes are not irreparable. As human beings we strive for certain ideals, concepts of the way we think we should be, and those concepts include a model of what we may consider “spiritual,” but in my opinion spirituality is actually not a concept nor does it cling to any particular model.

Although there are lots of spiritual and religious models for people to choose from. One such model is “yogi philosophy.” Yogi philosophy is one of the branches of Hinduism which includes the yogi breath or breathing techniques and all of the various styles of yoga, among other things.

“Know, O disciple that those who have passed through the silence, and felt its peace, and retained its strength, they long that you shall pass through it also. Therefore, in the Hall of Learning, when he is capable of entering there, the disciple will always find his master."

From "Light On The Path," Published in 1885 By Mabel Collins

In accordance with Yogi Philosophy, I have listed below what this philosophy considers the five major destructive properties of the human mind; their Sanskrit name with English explanation. I have also put my comments in parenthesis alongside each listing. These can not take root in a person unless invited in; self-indulgence allows all of these to occupy humanity. What I am sharing here comes directly from the Vedas, an ancient text. The basic premise is that what we give our attention to will grow.

KAM = Passion allowed to run into lust, and abnormal demand. We grow like that which we contemplate. Kam binds us to the animal plane. (Some might ask what is abnormal demand?)

KROFT = Anger and hate. A mental carcinoma. Anger causes confusion to scatter the mind from the center. Slander, fault finding, jealousy, destructive criticism, etc. are the “pups” of anger. Never criticize, find fault, abuse or blame anyone. When you speak ask yourself, is it true, necessary, and kind. (This is easier to do in a monastery than it is living in the general public)

LOFT = Greed. This binds us to the mineral plane, lower than the animal plane, and creates a God of gold and silver for us. While Kam degrades us, Kroft consumes us, and Loft hardens us. (Mmmmm…a cage made of gold is still a cage)

MOFT = Undo attachment to things. This will use up your time on earth and take you away from higher affairs. It makes you a slave to the lower planes. The liberation of the soul is what you are here for, nothing else matters. Moft will keep you from this freedom. (What stands in the way is the way, which is rather profound.)

AHANKAR = Vanity or egoism. Ahankar grows on the action of the other four perversions. Vanity operates with boasting long after the other four perversions have died. It is the source of error in humanity; it loudly says I am right and all others are wrong. (Self-love is one thing but vanity and narcissism in my opinion are another)

According to yogi philosophy the only thing worth doing in this life is to find a compatible spiritual path and walk in it.

Hmm, very nice, but, this would be better off in the Hinduism section...it would
get more of an audience, Starman.
You can ask...

I found it interesting to read and might not have if it had been in the Hindu section.

Maybe I should check those sections out now.

I searched in a few yoga term lexicons and couldn't find any of these terms. I did this because I'd never heard of any of them. Is it actually Hindu? Maybe someone could point me a better direction.

I think they were supposed to be Kaam (Lust), Krodh (Anger), Moh (Attachment), Lobh (Greed), Ahankaar (Pride/Ego).

Like, quoting from http://asitis.com/16/21.html

---
tri-vidham narakasyedam
dvaram nasanam atmanah
kamah krodhas tatha lobhas
tasmad etat trayam tyajet

SYNONYMS
tri-vidham—three kinds of; narakasya—hellish; idam—this; dvāram—gate; nāśanam—destructive; ātmanaḥ—of the self; kāmaḥ—lust; krodhaḥ—anger; tathā—as well as; lobhaḥ—greed; tasmāt—therefore; etat—these; trayam—three; tyajet—must give up.

TRANSLATION
There are three gates leading to this hell-lust, anger, and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.
