You're walking on thin ice, Matty.

The emphasis is on ritualism which is mindless symbolism. July 4 is coming up again and millions will be hitting the road, an annual practice. Jesus was against this when he told us to turn the other cheek and stop living like robots.

Secularism is ritualistic.

I thought this was about religion.

Jesus didn't teach that rituals are bad. He taught not to brag and be a show off about prayer, fasting, etc.

Bunny, do you know that Catholics have contributed significantly to education (schools) and healthcare (hospitals) in your country? Lutherans have also done a lot but Catholics are really out there. The other denominations do good works too despite the discrimination.

Do religions cause wars? Not directly, I don't think since they all share the same "love each other" message that promotes the welfare of society. Back in the days of the wild west, settlers - spread out miles apart on homesteads - would gather for security on Sunday to worship together. The church was their anchor to hope in their struggle against hardships to survive. When attacked, they would circle the wagon and fight. Is that war?

Ayar415,

Wars are more generally motivated by greed and the desire for power. The wish to acquire territory and the opportunity to plunder and to gain more subjects. To justify this it becomes advantageous to appropriate religion. Convince those that will die that “God is on our side”. At one time, if successful, the Church could share in the plunder. It had little to do with “winning souls for Christ”.

We are talking about religion which is primarily a social-cultural system of designated morals and worldview (Wikipedia). If you are a Christian, you can worship Jesus also mainly because he lived an exemplary life to show us how we ought to relate with one another.

Jesus never taught anything about rituals except (according to scripture) to gather in memory of him. And we do this by going to church to study the Bible and have suppers together, celebrate weddings, christenings, and mourn the lost of loved ones at funerals.

Quite true. The bottom line is that religion is as good as the practitioner.

Religion speaks to the human soul lost in the wilderness of despair. This wilderness is the home of beasts. If you are happy in this life living among fellow homo sapiens on Planet Earth, you don't need religion.

Even if you are not happy and would rather tough it out than submit to a higher power for deliverance, you don't need religion. You can choose the path of an unrepentant, convicted felon, face the death sentence rather than seek relief and appeal for a presidential pardon.

That's one of the reason's he was against ritualistic behavior. As he said about praying in private, if you only pray when it's in a social environment and don't pray when your alone. Then you're just serving a ritual
He wasn't against going to Temples to pray and serve God, just that people forget the reason they go in the first place when it becomes a ritual.
Jesus was against treating God or the Holy Spirit nor the Word as a ritual.

Just like 4th of July in America was mentioned. There's nothing wrong with celebrating Independence Day, but if you don't care less about Independence day until the next one and only care that it's a sociable day for everyone to get drunk and blow stuff up. Then is it really about Independence day or 4th of July. 4th of July day to get drunk would be the ritual.
Just like Memorial Day in America many just consider it to be the first big party if summer

Funny thing about Independence Day, is that many believe those living at that time got their independence from Great Britain then ....... which is far from the truth.
