Yes I do think that The Matrix has spiritual and metaphysical significance. You have to work out what The Matrix is a symbol for.
On the one hand, it could be capitalism and the consumer society and how people are enslaved by a money-making system.
And on the other, it could be a symbol for negative belief systems, and how “ the system “ encourages us to have them so that we can be controlled. Morpheus says that we are “ so alert, so hopelessly dependent on the system (the thought patterns and experiences we are familiar with) that we will fight to defend it. “ What he is looking to teach Neo, is to use the power of his mind to transcend all of it. Believe in something better. Believe that you are better.
