Basic history.......

Independence day was declared on July 4, 1776.

Most scholars believe we got our Independence April 9, 1784 when the treaty was finalized by Great Britain, France and us.

The interesting part of the treaty was we got the 13 colonies but also more land that was about equal to the size of the 13 colonies.

BigJohn,

I am glad that it is this way. To declare one’s independence with no guaranteed outcome was a true step of faith. People can see it differently. Take marriage for an example…..I put my money on the day of proposal trumping the wedding day.

You're walking on thin ice, Matty.
Thin ice is the only way to go

If Jesus was worried about not walking on thin ice and just agreeing with everyone for the sake of feeling safe or look better in others eyes. Then he would of never been Jesus Christ

July 4, 1776 was the day when brave people put their lives on the line and signed the Declaration of Independence giving Great Britain notice that her domination was over. The fight for freedom began on that day.

Great Britain gave up the fight and surrendered on April 9, 1784. Big difference, BigJohn.

We must not cancel our history.

How many people remember the date of when they proposed?

An interesting instance of religious tolerance and acceptance in history happened between the Hindus of India and the Zoroastrians of Persia who arrived in India as immigrants, fleeing religious persecution after the Arab conquest of Persia.

The Hindu king of the region , Jadi Rana known for his just disposition, gave them refuge and aslyum , and the Zoroastrians , also known as Parsis, flourished in India to a prosperous community with their culture intact.

King Jadi Rana, was curious about Zoroastrian beliefs and customs, and fifteen Sanskrit verses comprising the most important tenets of Zoroastrianism, was composed for him. This satisfied his inquiries, and he responded with a verse to them.

These fifteen verses, together with the king's response to them, are collectively known to the Parsis as the "Sixteen Shloka".

This event in history shows that inter-religious or international dialogue and polite, courteous behavior can go a long way in creating harmony between different religious and national cultures.

Freddie Mercury, considered as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music, was a descendant of the Parsis who had settled in India.

The enlightened master Meher Baba was also of Parsi origin.

Thanks for your wonderful discussion.

As for me, I have an affinity for the Parsees.

One famous chap, who lived in the State I live in now, tried building a Parsee Temple back in the 1870's. He had a road built to the top of a small mountain, flatten the mountain top so a Temple could be built. He dedicated the Temple to the Parsees on July 4 of that year in front of towns people, Indians and politicians.

Thanks for bringing up the Parsees.
