I'm a language and vocabulary observer. They can be our slaves or our masters.

Take John's use of "quite informative". In the USA this means 'very informative', a compliment, whereas in the UK it would simply mean 'fairly informative' i.e. What was written as a compliment might not be perceived that way by the intended recipient.

Little wonder that I am always banging on about defining words which have very different meanings for people - in this instance 'medium' and frequently confused with it 'psychic' for examples.

Effective communication is hard enough when we use common words differently from one another as above. When we use more specialised words we get even larger divergences of meaning and the risk of misunderstanding increases.

Vocabulary is so very important and yet often we treat it so very casually.
