I don't know what you call "strong mind". According to specialist studies, those of higher intelligence are more hypnotizable.

What news channel are you watching? They hypnotize you, and you aren't aware of that.

Absolutely!

Look at polls of opinion, at everything: mass hypnosis.

...... and most people are not aware of it.

I suspect the problem is people are not taught how to see if someone or something is hypnotizing them and if some of our beliefs are a result of hypnosis.

Also, glad to see you are back. I miss reading your posts.

Thank you! You are too kind. Glad to see you're still here, and looking forward to read your posts, too.

I am an advanced certified hypnotist (although I don't practise professionally). I can confirm that the only person who got near to a proper understanding on this thread is Miss Hepburn.

Hypnosis proper involves a close relationship of trust between client and hypnotist. Critical factor (Google if you don't know what that is) is, if you like, the "guard dog" which protects the subconscious from undue influence. There are ways to bypass critical factor, but co-operation and trust are both keys to success. Professional ethics are also an important aspect to hypnosis. No-one would risk his/her livelihood trying to influence someone adversely to that person's desire.

Another thing: contrary to all the ridiculous films showing people doing things against their will and without their conscious knowledge (even murder in a few films), in fact no-one can be forced to do something which is totally against their moral programming. If anyone tells you otherwise, they don't know what they are talking about.

But where a person sincerely *wants* to change something in life (e.g. stop smoking, overeating, unjustified jealousy, etc....) then a hypnotherapist can and will help. Desire to change and trust in the therapy are vital to success.

Some people here are confusing strong persuasion (commercial advertisements, social media influencing) with hypnotism. Once again, critical factor is the difference. One must overcome the "guard dog" first! That requires trust - and skill on the part of the hypnotherapist.

I hope that this reply will help the OP.

Even though I am not personally a hypnotist, what you wrote is my understanding as well.

There are many documented cases where hypnosis treatment has been very very helpful.

Thank you for sharing your professional perspective and clearing up common misperceptions.

You are more than welcome! It is indeed unfortunate that hypnotherapy, a noble discipline, has in the past become confused with the showmanship of stage hypnosis. They are totally different in their aims and objectives.

Today I stumbled upon this article about clinical hypnosis. It is very long and "plays safe", but there are some interesting parts:

I just bookmarked the article that you recommended and will read it later.

For your information, there is a section on hypnosis in the book, "The Holographic Universe". There was a young boy with Broque's Disease, an incurable disease where the patient has reptile-like skin. Under hypnosis, it was suggested to the boy that, when he came out of hypnosis, he could wash intensely for a specific period of time (2 weeks if I recall correctly) and the scales would fall off. The kid came out of the trance enthusiastically with the "idea" that he should wash intensely and that the scales would fall off. At the end of the designated period, the scales fell off naturally. I never forgot that example.

It is estimated that 20% of adults are highly hypnotizable (80% of children 7 to 12 years old).

A couple of informative links:
