Existence by Inferrence

Some author, perhaps Alan Watts, suggested that our existence is "inferred" . Do we, or do we not have any choice in the matter and manner of our existence? I think he also said (referring to reincarnation), that if it happened once, it can happen again! After all, we see the coming and going of all things all the time. Interesting things to ponder.

well as to the matter i dunno... as to the manner, it seems somewhat of a novelty that 'horton heard a who'. Beyond that what we go through just might be an arbitrary death-walk lol...

inĀ·fer, verb
past tense: inferred
deduce or conclude (information) from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements.
"from these facts we can infer that crime has been increasing"

You ask: Do we have a choice in the matter or manner of our existence.
From my personal exp, not from books...Oh my, we certainly DO!

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

As I said in another post today, could it be that 'The Self' is phantomised
through the 5 or 6 senses and follows an agenda which seeks to keep
that phantom in place both collectively and individually. If I can acquire
this and this I will be that and that etc.

The word inference could also be used in the sense of deduction. I can infer
there must be a self based upon the workings of my mind. My mind tells me
so many things that seem very real and very solid to me. On a relative level
this sense of self exists quite clearly but when examined it is supposed that
there is No Self. You cannot find an Absolute Self only in relation to a Relative
Self which is probably the inferred existence that Alan Watts is speaking about.
