I don't recall exactly how it goes, but there was a poem where Kabir calls us liars, anyone who would turn to God with words like, "You are the most beautiful, most adorable and worthy of worship" and then, in the next breath, focus all concerns on the world.

But then, there are also those who believe our worldly desires are God's own desires, expressed through us.

Also, it's not like suppressing would help anything. I'm hoping that, by being more mindful of desires and thinking it through instead of just reacting, it might help develop better discrimination, but it's so easy for the mind to get hung up on daft things.

Very true. Your point reminds me of that devotee (I don't recall his name, it's been a while since I heard the story) of Chaitanya's, who refused to accept a boon, saying something like, "I won't barter my love for worldly trinkets." After being talked into asking for something, all he wanted was that Chaitanya should always remain in his life in a context similar to Krishna the butter thief.

I absolutely agree, but at the same time, I think speaking out loud to God is something everyone should do, or at least try, sometimes. It's probably not that God needs to hear you with ears or anything like that, I suspect it's related more to your willingness to appear crazy in the eyes of the world. But there really is something to it.

While worldly trinkets too has its value , Love for divine too is very precious to treasure and preserve. We can have divine touch even in our worldly pursuits by understanding , respecting and following their precept even if slowly .

Speaking out loud is definitely good from psychological/physiological perspective. My point was God's language is multi-faceted and He can understand all kinds of communication (spoken/unspoken/thought/written/ unwritten /acted upon/between the lines) and determine the real talk/thought/point of the seeker easily.

You can keep a regular diary or log to check your thought process by writing down events where you were reactionary. This can help you to be aware of your thoughts, emotions, reactions and keep a distance between yourself and them.

This distance will enable you to regulate yourself and be more intelligently responsive than blindly reactive.

A nice little bridge between mantra and meditation, is finger mantra. Where you sit calmly in an Assana (formal sitting position) if possible. Let the first finger and thumb of the right hand touch and let the hand lie still on your leg. But with the left hand (the receiving hand) say a mantra, and with each syllable or word, touch fingers to the thumb in the following order; the first finger to the thumb, then with the second syllable touch the second finger to the thumb, and then on the third syllable, the third finger and then on the fourth the little finger to the thumb. Not all mantra`s suit this method as they have more syllables, although you can come back along the fingers if they do have more syllables. After each round of the mantra, go back to the first finger and thumb and begin again. Say the mantra slowly and sink into it and move the fingers at the start of each syllable. Listen to the vibration of each syllable and let it absorb you.
I use `Aum, mane Padme Hum`, which works well with this as does Aum Namo shivaya (although I split shiv and aya across two fingers in order to use all 4 fingers).

Close you eyes, say and touch, its lovely. have fun.
