little story

A few summers back my wife and I went huckleberry picking with friends near Noxon, Montana. First time we'd picked our own and we froze the surplus planning to eat 'em with ice cream over the following winter.

We prepared them carefully and bagged 'em in Hefty ziplock quart bags so we could easily defrost a few at a time. Great idea 'til we remembered all too late that we would be flying home in November and wouldn't be back for 3 months!

Our friends in our winter resort park enjoyed them instead of us! Never had any more since....

I once grew a bunch of huckleberries from seed. Later, I had my fill of huckleberry pies.

I prefer fry bread that is made with yeast over the baking
soda type.
In some places they call it Bannock.
A piece of fry bread and a slab of dry smoked salmon can go along way on a hike
in nature.

I use to have almost 2 acres in organic farming/gardening. My favorite was a huge Asparagus bed. I enjoyed making rose hip syrup, vinegars, sauerkraut, etc. There is a lot of diversity 'out there'.

I once asked a cabbage farmer why he buys plants instead of saving the seed...... he never realized you can get seeds from a cabbage.

I plan on making hardtack pretty soon.

I almost roll over in laughter when I see somebody, generally in Westers, toss somebody some hardtact to bite into.

Sure have!

One ingredient normally is hardtack.

During the American Civil War, some of the pemmican was totally unfit to eat..... yet that is what some soldiers had for food.

Fry bread is seen in many cultures. In eastern US, at the Italian festivals there is a fried bread made sweet with cinnamon a sugar or savory with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese.

On and off the Navajo reservation we saw it sweet and also topped with taco ingredients, ground meat, salsa, lettuce, tomato, cheese... Navajo Taco. :-)

We make them on rare occasions, as a treat. Usually winter when we need a few more calories with shoveling snow.

There are many recipes on the Internet. I have never tried the yeast variety, only the baking soda kind.
