And for those interested, Yogananda describes his meeting with Anandamayi Ma in Ch. 45 of Autobiography of a Yogi.

Peace

My spiritual mentor was a "soul sister" of Anandamayi Ma and I used to have a picture of the two of them together. We used to hear lots of stories about her at our ashram. Our ashram in Haridwar (India) is actually a short walk from Anandaymayi's mausoleum and I visited it frequently when I was at the Haridwar Khumba Mela in 1998. Both my teacher and Anandamayi Ma were featured in Linda Johnsen's book, Living Women Saints of India.

What I remember most about her was her statement when she revealed herself: "I am the all-pervading Reality".

Awesome !

Yes, I find Anandamayi Ma's teachings quite inspiring as well.

For me, her greatest teaching was that of virtuous conduct being potent enough on its own to attain enlightenment, and that agnostics and atheists are similarly capable of spiritual development. I consider this teaching important in modern times where philosophies like nihilism and existentialism erroneously consider all values to be mere mental abstractions.

There is a dialogue between Anandamayi Ma and a disciple of hers in this context...

Quote:
Question: Suppose an atheist lives an ethical and righteous life. Is he on a lower level than a faithful devotee?

Ma Anandamayi : An ethical life purifies the mind. Even though one may have no faith in God, if one believes in some Superior Power or pursues a high ideal, this also will serve one's purpose. By living an ethical life, one progresses towards the realization of the Divine.

Buddha had similarly stated that wholesome virtuous behavior is capable of realizing enlightenment.

Rajini Menon is a female enlightened master of recent times who attributed her enlightenment to practice of virtuous conduct....
