If the words ‘I am’ are being spoken on a surface level, with no real understanding of what it is those words are pointing to,
then it is just another robotic mantra.

‘I am’ is designed to point the awareness inwards, towards presence or stillness,
before ‘I am’ identifies with anything outside of itself.

If I Am = Ohm phonetically, it would equate to the cosmic reverberation omnipresent, a mantra that is generated automatically, without volition.

belittling others

I am sorry if you feel that has anything in reference to you . It's absolutely not there even in the bottom of my heart .

Generally my answer has 2 components - viz one which original questioner has in mind and is of his/her relevance and 2nd where I view the same from global perspective generally describing the spiritual topology which one may/should be aware off. This 2nd part is always general without anyone in mind . It may or may not apply to anyone . I try to include this 2nd part also as forum posts are general discussion platform besides one to one discussion.

Now the 'I am' that I spoke of belittling others is what we can/may see in life of people with knowledge, prosperity , power, beauty,,possessions etc. They have all sorts of adjectives/labels in life like 'I am beautiful/handsome / learned / sophisticated /smart / rich / powerful / glorious ....' always in comparison to others. These assertions of well being independent of others is ok and good . But when done in constant never-ending comparison to others denigrating/belittling others is not much helpful . This was the point I brought for general consideration from what we see in society . Of course this is not 'I am ' of spiritual context . It is the 'I am' we may see in the world .

Hope my clarification helps u understand the context of my post. It has no connotations / remarks on you per se .

Thanks for getting back.

Hi! :)
And, Yes.
Except, that the cosmic reverberation is not 'said'.
And as you imply is everywhere all the time, always has been, always will be :).
Seems they are imitating that 'ominipresent reverberation' (or sound, vibration).
How, repeating an imitation, I mean, Om, Aum, Ohm, I AM,
Ram, So hung, Ham so - can bring you to any God realization ...I dunno.
Except, *it can quiet the monkey mind ....and that's always good.

FYI :)

"Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh"

Pronounced: AY-he-yay ....ah-shear(or ah-share).... AY'-he-yay.

THIS
is what God said to Moses in Hebrew: I AM THAT I AM.
So Ehyeh would be "I Am".

The "I AM" mantra is not exclusive to Judaism. It is in other traditions as well.

Ramana Maharshi recommended the us of "I AM" (with no other thoughts) and this definitely can give one a sense of unity consciousness. Of course, Ramana added, there is a point at which one no longer even says "I AM".

Nisargadatta Maharaj identified "I AM" as the gateway from duality to non-duality and the absolute.

Hazrat Inayat Khan indicated that creation begins with the activity of consciousness, which is vibration. The "I AM" arises later and then it fans out into multiplicity.

Regardless of the language that is used, the "I AM" (with no other thoughts) is a very powerful mantra.
