"The Seven Social Sins", Gandhi (1925)

"The Seven Social Sins", Gandhi (1925)
  1. Wealth without work.
  2. Pleasure without conscience.
  3. Knowledge without character.
  4. Commerce without morality.
  5. Science without humanity.
  6. Religion without sacrifice.
  7. Politics without principle.

This sounds good!

Superficially anyone can say anything about anybody . Scope is just limitless . But there is little merit in it and there are not many buyers for it reality though internet may have some person claiming it . Be happy if that make u so.

I guess you misunderstood. This is a list made by Gandhi in 1925, not something that somebody said about him. I guess that upset you.

Apologize sincerely for my misunderstanding .

From Gandhi's "The Seven Social Sins",
I find 1. Wealth without work.
is worthy of discussion and is timely.

I agree, worthy and timely.

Some people like to quote John F. Kennedy “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”.

That can be extended to the way you see life, work, family, God, ... It is the idea of expecting (often pretending) to be given what you need, to be taken care of by something or somebody, as opposed to do your diligence to procure, produce, learn, make whatever you need. History, and common sense invalidate the former. Still, there are many who still push for it, some from foolishness, others from deceitfulness.
Wealth and wealthy tend to be vilified, without differentiating between those who achieved it through work and skill, and those who got it fraudulently, criminally, corruptly. Same with the other end of the spectrum, the "have-nots".

This can be applied to spiritual progress too: blindly following a guru, a dogma, mindlessly parroting concepts you don't understand vs. doing your diligence to learn, understand, evolve, grow.

It says "Wealth" without work, not 'existence' without work.

The alt-media has waged a long time propaganda campaign aimed at making 'Socialism' a dirty word, financed by some wealthy people who know the bulk of social assistance would come from them. Would that mean they ever miss a meal or even their summer house? No, it doesn't - but they feel what's theirs is theirs, no matter what.

But 'Socialism' means people helping people. That's literally what it means, and the truth is there are people who mentally or physically, and sometimes just through temporary incapacity or circumstances that are no fault of their own, are unable to provide for their own basic survival.

To those who fall behind there are those who would look them straight in the eye and tell them "You can just DIE," and that "We can't afford your misfortune," despite the complete lack of conscience, morality, principle, sacrifice, humanity and even character the first statement portrays, and the outright lie that is the second statement.

Wealth doesn't just apply to individuals (though there are individuals who will assume so), it also applies to societies (it doesn't say 'personal' sins, it says 'social' sins) - and sometimes the 'work' to make an entire society 'wealthy' is work in the most demanding and self-sacrificing definition. Anything else is just selfish and lazy - which is what JFK was actually talking about in his famous speech.

It sounds good at the surface, but it requires examination to know what he meant and to know how we think of it and would apply it ourselves.
In that light I would say I agree with your application...

... which is a call for individual responsibility, ownership, and action. This is a good position to start from.

inavalan,

Informative and revealing. Gandhi would have been writing against the backdrop of longtime British rule and exploitation. It is significant that number 1 on the list was 'wealth without work'.....I think the remainder of the list are all derivatives from wealth without work. We are familiar with the wisdom of "the love of money is the root of all evil". In many cases....wealth once acquired by any means is then passed to subsequent generations.....this is a part of the wealth without work.

Some years ago we enjoyed an all expernses paid trip to Cancun by a wealthy Mexican businessman. He owns hotels and resort propertoes on the coast. One night my wife struck up a conversation with the barmaid that was bringing us free drinks all night. Out of curiosity my wife found out that the barmaid's daily pay was 5 dollars. My jaw dropped open....I realized that the wealth of our host was greatly aided by essentially slave labor. That wealth once established was self-perpetuating.
