Is Consciousness just a word to describe the 5 senses?

A meditation technique referred to as resting in awareness, choiceless awareness, just sitting, do nothing meditation reveals the true nature of Consciousness. It takes a bit of practice but once "touched" one realizes it's always been there, unchanging. The screen upon which the movie is projected. This is why Advaita states Consciousness is self-revealing and self-evident.

Once touched it can't be untouched even though one won't be resting in it 24x7 unless one is Enlightened, however it's always available to rest in if one pays attention. It's even present in the midst of physical and mental activity, and no, it's not a Jedi mind trick. LOL!

It's the obvious hiding in plain sight. It's the seemingly ordinary that in fact is extraordinary.

JASG,

I was blown away by viewing your My Youtube conversation with Gino Yu, entitled "What is Consciousness?" See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxLy...ywQ vhBzzdrQA

Watching the two of you in conversation was soooo fascinating (BTW: I am assuming you are the silver-haired gentleman speaking, yes?).

I was especially struck by the interplay of what Miss Hepburn alluded to in her appreciation of your earlier comment in this thread: (i.e. the "ticking clock in the background"). In addition to Mr. Yu's references to the sights, sounds, and smells simultaneously accompanying his conversation with you, I wonder if you noticed how you each also spoke with your hands, faces, body language, (and even the Chinese language, so well spoken, and obviously understood between you)?

Which raises a seemingly unrelated point about "ordinariness". I happened to look at the Wikipedia reference for Ahamkara here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahamkara ,which as you can see, BEGS for someone of your expertise to upgrade it into the very effective and extraordinary approach you've placed here throughout SF, even as a single answer to just my post.

See, you can't "unring" the quality of your qualia, once heard", either!

This is the droid I was looking for!

BTW, I think your "Just a Simple Guy" appellation is "just an other way" for you to relate your seeming ordinariness that in fact is extraordinary.

Whaddaya think about the quality of that metaphoric take on your excellence?

(and even when you don't)

As much as I'd like to take credit I can't. The gentleman conversing with Gino Yu is not I but Robert Lawrence Kuhn and it's from his PBS series "Closer to Truth".

We do have one thing in common and that's a fascination with consciousness and the Ineffable.

I just aggregated a bunch of content on consciousness into that playlist, for my own reference and to share with anyone with an interest. For a decade I was digging down into consciousness studies and that playlist is a good representative sample.

The conversation between Gino and Robert is fascinating, isn't it? East vs. West. I'm also a big fan of David Chalmers though he would be considered a panpsychist. Peter Russell and John Hagelin also had a big influence on my journey as did Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff and their Orch OR theory of consciousness.

JASG,

....thanks for your reply (still ringing true)!

The closest I've come to the Ineffable is to spell it "Inaffable" in the following: https://www.spiritualforums.com/vb/s...mp;postcount=4

...but one can still read between the lines to catch my meaning

And how do we know we have souls? I can't feel one.

You can know from personal experience only, by self initiating an Out of body experience by yourself IF you have the guts to do it...

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

Just a case of mistaken identity. Not Guilty!

If I was in that video I'd be Gino Yu, not Robert Larwence Kuhn. https://youtu.be/VxLyAOxJriY?list=PL...ywQvhBzzdrQ A

Not by appearance but philosophy.

It is interesting though because like Mr. Kuhn I have been obsessed with consciousness and for the last dozen years and before last Fall I was coming at it from the realm of neuroscience, psychology, philosophy of mind and even physics combined with meditation.

The Eastern philosophy came in late last summer.

Miss Hepburn,

....mea culpa! One of the coolest examples of mistaken identity I've made since I joined SF!

Must be because his appellation is "Just A Simple Guise" for his extraordinariness!

... And when your friends say that you are even more beautiful than Katharine Hepburn herself, there's no mistaking that "Extraordinary does as extraordinary is": whatever his or her name.
