I've had issues with UTI's and my best advice from personal experience is:

-Take cranberry extract pills not cranberry juice because of the high sugar content in the juice which isn't favorable.
-Drink lots of water.
-Shower before and right after intercourse (if this applies)
-Get up and urinate "immediately" after intercourse (very important) it helps to flush out any bacteria that may have intered the urethra.
- I've recently read about D-Mannose supplements being helpful.
- If all else fails your Dr. can prescribe 1 antibiotic after intercourse, its very helpful if nothing else works.

Hope this helps. :-)

I ran this by my wife (a long-time nurse) and she recommends that you get tested for the possibility of diabetes. She was involved in diabetic teaching for a year or so and learned that one of the symptoms of diabetes is chronic UTI's. In such cases the body is dumping sugars through the urine, which is providing plenty of nutrients for the growth of bacteria and yeasts.

The one test you can get is the AIC. If your levels are between 5-6 then you're likely pre-diabetic.... if they're 6,7 or in the 8's then the problems are much deeper...

This is worth looking into...

..here's a link to a page with more info on the A1C test:

Also, I ran across the MIR Method this morning, and it sounds wonderful and I am excited to be starting it. One of the first steps in the method talks about acidity in the body, so this might be used to clear that up.

Also, you might look at, excuse my while I use the phrase, if you are [angry] at anyone? The body reacts to what we are telling ourselves, so if you use that phrase a lot, that could be part of it.... just something to think about. :)

I worked with someone who kept telling people that " he broke my heart" and she did this for quite a while, and I kept telling her to stop telling her body that, but she didn't listen and ended up having a heart attack, which led to many other dibilitating physical symptoms.

If we try not to use "organ" language when speaking to ourselves or to someone else about our situations, that never hurts to try.

I've had issues with chronic UTIs and kidney infection too. Here is what worked for me :
- I take cranberry pills everyday (just like moontulip, I try to stay away from the juice because it has too much added sugar)
- I pee and rinse myself after every intercourse. No soap as it could cause irritation, just water. I ask my significant other to wash his hands and be overall clean.
- I went to my urologist who prescribed me a very heavy preventive antibiotics treatment. Heavy, because of the side effects. I don't know for sure if this treatment has been very effective, but since my UTI problem is gone now, I think I should get my doctor some credit for it
- I broke up with my ex-boyfriend... We had a lot of issues and I realized afterwards that at some point, getting the UTIs was probably an unconscious technique for me to not have sex with him...

By any chance, did you get your urine tested? There many many antibiotics on the market (not only 2 that your doctor seems to prescribe on and on) and some are specifically targetted for specific germs... They might work for you better than your current medicine. Besides, if you use one antibiotic for too long, your body will become used to it and the efficiency will be decreased.

i have had issues with UTI's too. for me what happens is i get a yeast infection and since my yeast infections are pretty a-syptomatic until they get really bad and have been there a while they often turn into a UTI. i would recommend treating the uti, then (if you have a yeast infection) treat the yeast infection (antibiotics ALWAYS give me yeast infections so i wait until after the antibiotic course to treat the yeast infection). ask your doctor to also prescribe you diflucan or you can try the over the counter stuff like monistat too (the diflucan always works for me, the OTC stuff mostly works.. depends on how bad it is.)

i have also found that, as has been mentioned, pee-ing before and immediately after sex as well as making sure your partner's (and YOUR) hands are clean prior to intimacy is helpful. also, when you wipe after using the toilet, make sure to wipe toward your anus (front to back). wiping the other way can get stuff into your vagina that you don't want there.

cranberry pills work nicely as do pomegranates and dark cherries. i use the only cranberry no sugar added juice and put it in fruit smoothies (the only ingredients should be cranberries and water... it would be extremely tart on its own, but mixed with other fruit it is drinkable).

lastly, you should talk to your doctor about this as well. if they are not willing/ able to help you and discuss alternative options, perhaps you should consider getting a second opinion (and going to an actual gynecologist as opposed to a general practitioner... if you aren't already)

My gynecologist never really took my UTI problem seriously, nor did my general practitioner. Actually I was never really treated for the UTIs on a long run perspective until I went to see my Urologist. Urologists are experts of the urinary tract system (as opposed to the genital system for Gynecologists). Seeing the right specialist directly will really, really help :)
Plus, most Urologists have a majority of 50+ years old male patients, so they're always happy to take on a new young female patient

Oh yeah, speaking of sitting in a tub taking baths is not very advised when you are prone to UTIs... soaking in warm water + germs = painful !!!

But germs are only relevant if you're "vulnerable" to their proliferation... at any time you have within you around 10,000 differing stains of bacteria and yeast. Many of these are beneficial, many benign, and many unhelpful... there is a dance at play within us where populations are continually in flux... if a particular unhelpful species should proliferate, then that's telling us something... that our balance is off... and that the "bad" organisms are getting a foothold.

Why do some people get sick, while the person sitting next to them doesn't? It's not the "bug" itself, it's the bodily environment that's heavily at play here... we need to be addressing why our system is "off", to the point that a "bad" organism is capable of dominating to this degree... an illness or infection is the equivalent of a canary in the coal mine... our bodies are designed to never get sick, if something is off then the whole system-of-our-exposures needs to be looked-over more closely...

I totally agree with you, Stephen. I was simply pointing out the fact that when you are prone to UTIs, baths are not advised, because you are vulnerable to them, to use your own words. Obviously, yes, you should investigate why you are so vulnerable to these specific germs, but in the meantime there are a bunch of really silly little habits that can help you not getting sick again, and mostly not being in an awful lot of pain. Hence my post about baths.

Meanwhile... the original poster vanished
