What happens when the "darkness before your eyes" deepens?

I meditate with my eyes closed and I notice a particular pattern, where initially there is energetic movement in my head and some sense of lights passing before my eyes. This is accompanied by a pleasant shifting sensation of depth (like seeing 3D even though there is nothing to see) in the "darkness before my eyes". At some point though, maybe after 40 minutes or so, I notice a quieting in my head and it looks like the dim background lighting that was there so far is turned down and things become darker in my head (not in a metaphorical sense but in a literal sense). I'm curious what the explanation for this could be. Maybe it's just my third eye quieting down?

This thought came immediately, I will share it, for what it's worth -

It is darkest before the dawn.

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru

INTERESTING!

Have you ever opened your eyes to see what is going on around you?

I generally meditate with my eyes open. When I am up in the mountains, when things start to get darker, actually it is more like a fog, I know that the spirits around me will be appearing.

For me, I found depth, a deepness, in the darkness. When I close my eyes sometimes everything gets very dark, and I feel like I have entered another space, another room. I look around in the darkness and see that it has depth, width, and height. The darkness is literally another dimension, it is also another dimension figuratively.

There are times in meditation when my body literally fills with light, and I find that I am also that light. At other times I sit in silent darkness. One of the hardest things to do is nothing. Which includes no mental activity. Clarity comes with the absence of everything. Silence has a presence and so does the darkness. It is neither good nor bad, it just has its own quality. Get to know the absence.

From a technical perspective of meditation it's just another distraction like a thought. Just let it go and gently bring attention back to the object of focus, otherwise it's like getting lost in thought while meditating and defeats the purpose of the practice.

What Starman said is absolutely correct. Meditation is a state of being but to achieve that state one has to practice and there are all sorts of techniques to progressively help one along the way.

What one finds, or at least what I find, is after a time that state is present even in the midst of activity, both physical and mental, and even in chaos. The mind-body does what the mind-body does when interacting with the world, however there's a place, a state of being, that's absolutely undisturbed by all the goings on. Find that place and be able to rest in it regardless of the worldly goings on.

Generally speaking; human beings have been holding on for so long, mainly out of fear, that we have forgotten how to let go. It took time for me to actually let go, and I am still doing it in greater interior realms. Meditation is about letting go inside.

Take a relaxing bath or do some stretching exercises before you begin meditating. Say a prayer and approach meditation humbly as a communion. Lots of people approach meditation as some sort of gymnastics, or they may be seeking ecstasy, clarity, or some other type of experience. I approach meditation, most of the time, as communing with my own primordial nature.

There is no right or wrong way, there is just your way. That primordial presence is always with us, no matter what we have gone through, or whether we acknowledge it or not. We are all being grown automatically, all meditation does is speed up the process.

Peace and Good Journey
