I don't think they say that, but it is diagnosed through behavioral assessments without biological markers which can be positively tested. Basically, it is a subjective category that classifies behavioural traits, and where the 'spectrum' begins is fairly arbitrary...

However - This highly complex question has me at times stumped and rendered speechless:

One "wrong" idea we carry can prevent inner peace for our entire lifetime.

Buddha's enlightenment was really the result of an idea, a realization about ideas.

Ideas can be a result of what we believe, or what we know. And what we believe and know can be true or false, right or wrong. Can even be right with aspects of wrong.... or wrong with aspects of right or true... as ideas link up with each other in various ways. Ideas are like threads in a spider web all connected in complex ways. Ideas can be based on things we see or know learned from experience and observing or they can just be things we accept from reading or hearing them from others or they simply are produced by the brain and thought, are presented to us, and we accept them.

It's interesting how much ideas affect our experience and actions, and who and what we are and project moment to moment, yet how little we pay attention to what ideas are coloring our present moment. And to entertain and explore what life is like if we don't identify with our ideas. But then that's another idea, to be free of, or non-identified with ideas.

I'd guess consciousness, awareness, is like a headphone cord that can be plugged into various inputs... a tv set on the news, a speaker hooked up to a new age music channel, a program on netflix about whatever... plugged into our ideas about our past, plugged into ideas about Buddhism..... plugged into reactions in our minds to this or that.... whatever we are focused on.

How often do we chose to be plugged into nothing besides the 5 senses and inner peace and emptiness?

The monk seeing in states of becoming, no essence,
as he would, when examining fig trees, no flowers,
sloughs off the near shore & far, as a snake, its decrepit old skin.

The monk whose discursive thoughts are dispersed, without leaving a trace,
sloughs off the near shore & far, as a snake, its decrepit old skin.

Buddha ~ Sutta Nipāta - The Snake Chapter (Uraga Vagga)

The Buddha's enlightenment had nothing to do with an idea or anything related to ideas.

If one has ever experienced deep silence one can begin to understand the Snake Chapter.

If not, all you have is ideas about it which can never come close to the truth.
