I think its conditioning..the same as we humans. When the phone rings, we answer it. We can do tasks on automatic pilot while concentrating on something else. We get used to turning a water-tap on one way and a light switch another....and find it hard to get out of that habit when they are different. We have to re-wire the learning process of that task.

The same with animals. If we hand them food and say 'gentle' often enough the dog will eventually learn what pleases us by our responses to his taking the food. They go on our responses...pats, smiles, excitement and more rewards.

Animals are very smart...more then we give them credit for.
